JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Men who had sworn an oath to protect and serve were huddled on the back porch of a Mississippi home as Michael Corey Jenkins lay on the ground, blood gushing from his mutilated tongue where one of the police officers shoved a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. The roughly 90-minute period of terror preceding the shooting began late on Jan. 24 after a white neighbor called Rankin County Deputy Brett McAlpin and complained that two Black men were staying with a white woman inside a Braxton home. McAlpin tipped off Deputy Christian Dedmon, who texted a group of white deputies who called themselves “The Goon Squad,” a moniker they adopted because of their willingness to use excessive force. “Are y’all available for a mission?” Dedmon asked. They were. A little more than six months after the racist attack on Jenkins and his friend Eddie Terrell Parker, who are Black, six former officers pleaded guilty on Thursday. The officers included Christian Dedmon, Hu...New cannabis consumption bus debuts in Denver

TikTok is set to face a privacy fine by early September for its handling of teenagers’ and children’s data, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.Europe’s network of national privacy regulators, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), on Wednesday resolved disagreements among agencies in an investigation into the popular video-sharing platform used by 125 million people in the bloc. Their decision kicks off a process giving TikTok’s lead privacy regulator in the EU, the Irish Data Protection Commission, a month to issue the final penalty and any potential measures. The size and details of the fine are unknown. The Irish data authority in 2021 started probing whether TikTok was respecting children’s privacy under the requirements of the EU’s landmark privacy rulebook, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). After acquiring starting pitcher Jack Flaherty from the St. Louis Cardinals with minutes to go before Tuesday’s trade deadline, the Orioles used the final moments of that ticking clock to pursue another reliever. They had snagged dynamic right-hander Shintaro Fujinami from the Oakland Athletics about two weeks ahead of the deadline, but Baltimore’s front office still sought to fortify the middle of manager Brandon Hyde’s bullpen. Their inability to do so means anyone else who arrives to boost a heavily used bullpen over the next two months will likely already be in the organization. The Orioles will notably get an extra bullpen spot in September when rosters expand.Almost half of the Orioles’ American League-best 67 victories have come in games they’ve won by one or two runs, prompting Hyde to frequently rely on All-Star relievers Yennier Cano and Félix Bautista. Cano has had some struggles of late, having pitched in about 50% of Baltimore’s g...Latest news
