SANTA CLARA — When the 49ers’ offseason program concludes to start summer break, coach Kyle Shanahan urges his players to stay ready during their 40 days away before training camp. Don’t get out of shape. Show up with a clear head, prepared to hit the ground running. As for the coaches, not so much. Shanahan loves to get away and as he puts it, “do the things we don’t want the players to do.”Try as he might, that’s a difficult sell to Kris Kocurek, the 49ers’ manic defensive line coach. He remembers sleepless nights before football games and track meets at Caldwell High in Texas, anticipating his next pass rush move or a personal best in the shot put.Kocurek is 44 now, and some of the rough edges have softened through real life experience. Yet the anticipation for competition remains as Kocurek awaits the chance to get in the trenches with his guys.“It’s mid-summer and we’re on a break and I can’t sleep at night ...

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- Oakland's property crime problem is spilling onto the waterfront with burglars now targeting boats on the estuary. In some instances, thieves will travel in small boats and pry open dock boxes in the middle of the night. According to marina residents, they have taken engines or sometimes small boats or dinghies. Craig Jacobsen, Outboard Motor Shop president, says he and many of the marina residents believe the people committing these crimes live in encampments along the estuary or on stolen boats."We know 100 percent who is doing it and where they are and all of that. We had one of them arrested last week with some of our stolen products. Two days later he's back out on his boat again,” Jacobsen said. Berkeley to resume housing development at People’s Park Jacobsen says Oakland police have told him they can't do much."They sent me an email back a little while ago saying they're just so tied up with violent crime that all their officers are on violent ...

Berkeley to resume housing development at People's Park

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:12:54 GMT

BERKELEY, Calif. (KRON) -- The California State Assembly has approved a bill that allows the City of Berkeley to continue its housing construction at People's Park. This bill approval amends the California Environmental Quality Act of 1970 which prevented construction on projects that did not study a potential for noise pollution generated from future residents after they move into the area.According to the State Assembly, UC Berkeley currently provides housing for only 23 percent of its students, which is the lowest rate in the University of California system. Officer fired for shooting and killing Sean Monterrosa has termination overturned The new building would house more than 1,100 students in a 148-unit apartment building. The construction will also allow the university to build a separate unit that will house over 60 homeless people who currently sleep at the park.“This is a victory for affordable housing and that means it’s a victory in our ongoing efforts to tack...

Best Buy and the reluctant shopper. Sales fall as Americans pull back on spending

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:12:54 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Sales and profits at Best Buy slid in the second quarter as the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain continues to wrestle with a pullback in spending after Americans splurged during the pandemic. The decline in sales was smaller than what Wall Street had anticipated, however, and profits were better than expected, sending shares higher in early trading. The U.S. job market has remained resilient, but Americans are facing higher prices and more expensive credit with the Federal Reserve hiking benchmark interest rates to combat inflation. It’s more expensive to take out loans for appliances, cars and houses, or to use a credit card. As a result, consumers have become reluctant to spend unless there is a sale. They’re being more selective with what they will buy and, in many cases, trading down to buy cheaper stuff.Retailers including Best Buy are also now bracing for the impact from the ending of the student loan moratorium, which had provided one-tim...

US Ryder Cup team adds familiar picks with Fowler and Thomas. It also gets a LIV player with Koepka

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:12:54 GMT

U.S. captain Zach Johnson filled out his Ryder Cup team with familiar faces in Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler, along with LIV Golf player Brooks Koepka, as the Americans try to end three decades of losing on European soil.Johnson also went with Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns, who will make his Ryder Cup debut in Rome having not won a match in a home Presidents Cup last fall.Among those Johnson left out were Cameron Young, who finished at No. 9 in the Ryder Cup standings, and Keegan Bradley, who won twice this season and finished 11th in the standings.Thomas was getting the most attention because he was No. 15 in the standings, has gone 15 months without winning and failed to finish among the top 70 who reached the FedEx Cup playoffs this month.Thomas, however, is considered the emotional spark for the U.S. team. He has a 6-2-1 record in two Ryder Cups and pairs well with Spieth, the three-time major champion who has played in every Ryder Cup since 2014.The matches are...

US consumer confidence wanes as summer draws to a close

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:12:54 GMT

American are feeling less confident financially as summer comes to a close as high prices and interest rates weigh on their willingness to spend. The Conference Board, a business research group, said its consumer confidence index tumbled to 106.1 in August from a revised 114 in July. Analysts were expecting a reading of 116.The index measures both Americans’ assessment of current economic conditions and their outlook for the next six months. Both measures saw significant declines in August.Consumers’ view of current conditions fell to 144.8 from 153, and the index for future expectations slid to 80.2 from 88 in July. Readings below 80 for future expectations historically signals a recession within a year.Consumer spending accounts for around 70% of U.S. economic activity, so economists and investors pay close attention to their mood to gauge how it may affect the broader economy.Source
