Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Friday demanded that police clamp down on violence occurring at the country’s beaches. “Because the weekend is starting and the seaside resorts will probably be full of tourists, I want to call on the law enforcement to be very firm in enforcing the law. People want law and order,” Ciolacu said, according to Romanian outlet Digi24. A spate of violence has broken out in recent days at Romanian seaside resorts, with tourists fighting police, lifeguards and each other — and Ciolacu is fed up. He demanded that police show “zero tolerance” toward anyone causing carnage at the Black Sea coast, as the region readies for another weekend of blazing sunshine, high temperatures and cold beers. “The policemen and the gendarmes have my full support, of the entire government and of all the people of common sense in this country,” Ciolacu added Friday. In one seaside scrap this week police were called after tw...Open the pubs! England in revolt over World Cup final beer laws

LONDON — After 67 years of waiting, England wants to celebrate its first World Cup final with a traditional pint of ale. But archaic licensing laws have other ideas.Decades on from the 1966 World Cup final — the last, and only, time either the England men or women’s football team made the final — England’s Lionesses are set to face Spain in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday. But there’s one problem: the game, hosted by Australia, kicks off at 11 a.m. U.K. time — before many of England’s public houses are allowed to serve booze.Politicians, lobbying groups and fans have united behind calls for leniency so that Sunday’s game can be enjoyed — or endured — with a morning pint. Under England’s strict licensing laws, pubs have specific hours they are allowed to serve alcohol from. These vary depending on the specific license granted by local councils. Most are unlikely to be able to sell alcohol until after the game kicks off. However, such rule...There’s no coup! Slovak president calls for calm after arrest of spy chiefs

When Atlanta Braves All-Star right-hander Bryce Elder faced the Orioles in early May, there were still questions of how valid Baltimore’s hot start was. But that outing showed Elder that the Orioles were legitimate.“When you look through the lineup, you don’t see a Mike Trout, you don’t see a really, really big name,” Elder said last month. “But man, I’ve never seen a whole team’s approach stay the same, and they never went away from it. Never.“They’re just a frustrating lineup to face.”To Elder’s point, the offense that has Baltimore holding the American League’s best record three-fourths into the season isn’t full of hitters having sensational years. Instead, a collection of solid campaigns has created one of baseball’s deepest lineups.Entering Baltimore’s day off Thursday, only two teams have fewer regulars with an OPS above .800 than the Orioles, but only one has more with an OPS over...17th annual Boston Herald preseason all-EMass football team

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — If mutinous soldiers who ousted Niger’s president succeed, it will threaten democracy and security across the region and the continent, a high-ranking member of Bazoum’s political party warned in an interview with The Associated Press.Boubacar Sabo said President Mohamed Bazoum had been “kidnapped” by members of the presidential guard who overthrew him on July 26 and have since kept him under house arrest.“What is happening in Niger, if it succeeds, is the end of democracy in Africa. It’s over. … If we fight today, it is to prevent these kind of things from happening and to ensure a future for our continent,” Sabo said on Thursday. Sabo is deputy secretary general of Bazoum’s Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism. In a region rife with coups, Niger was seen as one of the last democratic countries that Western nations could partner with to beat back a growing jihadi insurgency linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.
