New cars are supposed to be safer, but not for pedestrians, cyclists

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:25:06 GMT

By Travis Loller | Associated PressNASHVILLE, Tenn. — Alyssa Milligan was someone who intuitively knew when another person needed help, encouragement or a kind word. Although she was new to Tennessee, the 23-year old physical therapy student, whose mother called her “Sweet Alyssa,” had already made many close connections, especially within the tight-knit cycling community around Nashville — before she was killed this month, struck by a pickup truck while cycling with a friend.Roadway deaths in the U.S. are mounting despite government test data showing vehicles have been getting safer. While the number of all car-related fatalities has trended upward over the last decade, pedestrians and cyclists have seen the sharpest rise: over 60% between 2011 and 2022.It coincides with a steep increase in sales of SUVs, pickup trucks and vans, which accounted for 78% of new U.S. vehicle sales in 2022, according to Motorintelligence.com.Current U.S. ratings only consider the safety of ...

By Lindsay Whitehurst | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Hunter Biden sued Rudy Giuliani and another attorney Tuesday, saying the two wrongly accessed and shared his personal data after obtaining it from the owner of a Delaware computer repair shop. The lawsuit was the latest in a new strategy by Hunter Biden to strike back against Republican allies of Donald Trump, who have traded and passed around his private data including purported emails and embarrassing images in their effort to discredit his father, President Joe Biden. The suit accuses Giuliani and attorney Robert Costello of spending years “hacking into, tampering with, manipulating, copying, disseminating, and generally obsessing over” the data that was “taken or stolen” from Biden’s devices or storage, leading to the “total annihilation” of Biden’s digital privacy. The suit filed in California also claims Biden’s data was “manipulated, altered and damaged” before ...

At site of San Lorenzo house fire, cops find clandestine ketamine lab

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:25:06 GMT

SAN LORENZO — A home that caught fire here earlier this month was being used to manufacture large amounts of ketamine, according to Alameda County drug task force agents assigned to investigate the blaze. The fire occurred on Sept. 6 at a home on the 15000 block of Via Media in San Lorenzo, according to police. Inside, authorities reportedly found large flasks, sifters, bags of chemicals and other evidence indicative of a clandestine drug lab.Authorities initially weren’t sure whether they were dealing with a cannabis honey oil manufacturing facility, or something out of Breaking Bad, the TV crime drama about methamphetamine production. But an analyst with the Drug Enforcement Administration finally gave police their answer: it was the dissociative anesthetic ketamine that was being manufactured.Because ketamine disconnects people from reality, it is sometimes taken as a hallucinogen. Users commonly refer to it colloquially — but not accurately — as “hor...

She wrote about a “relentless pursuit of total destruction” in an email to New Yorker writer Sheelah Kolhatkar. This pursuit, she said, has enabled “a credulous public” and the media to “unfairly” assume that her 31-year-old son is guilty because it has failed to examine weaknesses in the government’s case, the New Yorker reporte...
